Nothing About Us Without UsIndependent Living- The philosophy of independent living emphasizes the importance of consumer control, peer support, self-help, self determination, equal access, and individual and systems advocacy, in order to maximize the leadership empowerment, independence, and productivity of individuals with disabilities, and the integration and full inclusion of individuals with disabilities into the mainstream of American Society. For more information about landmark legislation and court cases affecting individuals with disabilities, please visit the Independent Living Resource Unit at www.ilru.org. How can you help? Personal stories are often the most persuasive testimony Senators hear. If you have a personal story you would like to share, email us at nesilc@alltel.net.
Senators also love to hear from their constituents. That is why the NESILC has developed the StateWide Action Team (SWAT). The purpose of SWAT is to serve as a grassroots advocacy team. Whenever important issues affecting individuals with disabilities are being debated in the Unicameral, NESILC staff will send a legislative alert to SWAT members informing them of important issues affecting individuals with disabilities. To become part of the SWAT, email us at nesilc@alltel.net. State Plan on Independent Living (SPIL)- Every three years, the Nebraska Statewide Independent Living Council partners with the Department of Vocational Rehabilitation and the Nebraska Commission for the Blind and Visually Impaired to write a State Plan on Independent Living. Utilizing public input, the SPIL outlines goals and objectives important to Nebraskans with Disabilities. If you want to help provide input which will shape the next SPIL, please fill out the Consumer Needs Survey below. Your name and personal information is not asked for on the survey, and questions about ethnicity and gender are for background information only. No information you share will be distributed or used for any other purpose than the development on the SPIL.
