The purpose of the state plan is to describe how the state’s network of independent living programs and services will meet the independent living needs of persons with disabilities in the state.
The Independent Living agencies of Nebraska (NESILC, Vocational Rehabilitation, the Commission for the Blind and Visually Impaired, and the Centers for Independent living, & Part B Providers) are in the process of meeting at the Lincoln Community Foundation Building at 215 Centennial Mall South, 5th floor conference room to develop Goals & Objectives. We want to hear from you! Read up on our proposed goals and objectives and about what Independent Living is, then submit your comments or the Consumer Needs Survey to us at nesilc@alltel.net.

- Statewide Independent Living Councils (SILCs) were established under the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 as amended. Created under Title VII of the Rehabilitation Act SILCs are cross-disability councils comprised of a majority of individuals with disabilities, family members, and advocates. SILCs are mandated to uphold the philosophy of Independent Living. - The philosophy of Independent Living emphasizes the importance of consumer control, peer support, self-help, self determination, equal access, and individual and systems advocacy, in order to maximize the leadership empowerment, independence, and productivity of individuals with disabilities, and the integration and full inclusion of individuals with disabilities into the mainstream of American Society.
